Chairangle
Boulder, April 2024
The “Chairangle” is a cardboard chair designed as a partner project with Emi Takaoka. Made entirely out of laser-cut cardboard, it was built without glue, relying on joinery and the strength of triangles to distribute weight effectively. The use of triangles not only provided structural integrity but also showcased the simplicity and ingenuity of our design approach.
The chair is sturdy enough to hold body weight for long periods and offers two different ways to sit, making it versatile and functional. Emi and I worked seamlessly as a team, combining creativity and precision to bring this project to life. Our collaboration allowed us to push the limits of what cardboard can achieve, turning a simple material into a robust and innovative seating solution.
Precedents and Process
Our design was inspired by Zoe Martinez’s cardboard chair, which also avoided using glue and emphasized clean, minimal construction. We loved the idea of using triangles as the primary structural element, drawing on their natural strength and weight-distributing properties. Additionally, Aljoud Lootah’s geometric designs influenced the aesthetic, encouraging us to expose the triangular patterns for both decoration and function. Using these precedents as a foundation, we laser-cut every piece of cardboard, ensuring precision and consistency throughout the build. The use of finger joints allowed us to create strong connections, keeping the chair durable and seamless.
