The SavannaSeat

The SavannaSeat is a testament to my journey into furniture design, created during a two-month study abroad program in Copenhagen, Denmark, in the summer of 2023. As my first woodworking project, this chair sparked my passion for crafting functional and beautiful furniture. Inspired by Kaare Klint’s iconic Safari Chair, the SavannaSeat features an adjustable back, offering unparalleled comfort for lounging. Combining Danish design principles with a modern twist, this piece reflects both the heritage of Scandinavian craftsmanship and my own evolving design aesthetic.

The Design

The SavannaSeat features a canvas seat and back, both removable and interchangeable, allowing for versatility in color and easy maintenance, as they can be washed or swapped out. The adjustable design incorporates leather belt buckle straps, ensuring the perfect fit while accommodating any natural stretching of the fabric over time, blending practicality with timeless style.

The process of creating the SavannaSeat began with a week-long study tour across Finland and Sweden, immersing myself in the principles of Scandinavian design. Inspired by this experience, I sketched and iterated my concept before crafting a to-scale cardboard prototype. After refining the design, I built the chair using three 2x4s of washed Scandinavian maple, with sturdy domino joinery for a seamless construction. To complete the design, I sewed the removable canvas seat and back, blending craftsmanship with thoughtful functionality.
