Where social connection meets sculptural simplicity .

DUO is a sculptural furniture piece inspired by the beauty of shared moments—two chairs that join as one table. Designed to spark connection through form and function.

Concept

DUO is a pair of lounge chairs that transform into a side table when stacked, designed to foster both comfort and community. Mind Mapping

I began with a mind map centered around the word horizon. Exploring how words connect led me to choose connection as the theme for my capstone.
Research & Inspiration

I studied how people connect through furniture and everyday objects. This led me to brainstorm different forms that could encourage conversation and interaction
Concept Exploration

Ideas like a game table and a conversation chair stood out. From there, I sketched multiple possibilities, experimenting with forms that balance function and symbolism
Iteration and Feedback

I built quick prototypes, tested variations, and refined the design through feedback. At every stage, I asked myself why to ensure each choice was intentional.
Breakthrough Moment

The idea of stacking two chairs to create a table came unexpectedly. This moment became a core of the project and guided the direction forward
Prototyping

I developed full-scale 1:1 cardboard models to study dimensions and ergonomics, then moved into Rhinoceros 3D for digital renderings to refine proportions.
Material Experimentation

I explored veneer bending techniques and structural stability, testing how material choices could enhance both form and durability.
Fabrication

Witch three weeks to build, I cut and bent 104 pieces of veneer for the chairs backs, CNC’d the base, and upholstered the removable cushions.
Final Piece

After more than 120 hours in the workshop, I’m proud of how DUO came to life— blending form and function into a piece that’s both adaptable and intriguing

DUO: The culmination of an Undergraduate Journey

As my final project at the University of Colorado Boulder’s College of Environmental Design, DUO represents the culmination of my undergraduate work. This project not only deepened my appreciation for the design process but also solidified my passion for furniture making, hands-on craftsmanship, and exploring how thoughtful design can shape human connection.
